Jae Walford is a Phoenix rising from the ashes
Jae was born and grew up in New Zealand. At the age of 13 he started delivering a paper run, and washing dishes at the local retirement village. Jae didn’t enjoy school much at all, and that lead him to dropping out midway through his final year. He moved cities, found a new job, and that’s really where the slide to rock bottom began. In very quick succession, Jae’s now 16yr old daughter was conceived, and his brother was diagnosed with cancer. He struggled during his brothers battle, and on the 3rd of the January 2003 his brother passed away.
This sent Jae on a journey of self-destruction, but also self-discovery. Not long after his brother’s death, he left his partner; He had just wanted to escape in every way possible, leading to the all too common spiral of alcohol and drug addiction. Jae went through a period of homelessness where he floated around, staying on couches, and hitchhiking from place to place, but a period in which he found solace and beauty.
The biggest turning point was going Sober in 2016 after a protection and parenting order had been taken out against him. Through that, Jae had to do a living with non-violence course, and chose to do a Man Kind Project Adventure. Alongside these changes, Jae has also committed to a heap of spiritual and personal development. He is currently building a coaching business, helping others with drug and alcohol addiction, and is getting established as a child youth and family mentor to help struggling teenage men in New Zealand.
Owning the past, taking responsibility for past mistakes, forgiving yourself, and moving on toward a positive present and future is a story many people need to hear, so Jae, thank you brother for joining us.
