‘After eight years in the making, Red Dead Redemption II is set to launch in Spring 2018, and all of the material released so far - a few dozen photos and two trailers - show every indication of a masterpiece of narrative, world design, gameplay in the making over at Rockstar Studios. As gleaned from both officially released previews and (skip if you are avoiding any and all spoilers) the leaked map. As always with Interactive Artistry, the conversation endeavours to be as all-encompassing, thorough, comprehensive and exhaustive as possible, even delving into each host's personal wishlist of features and narrative developments in the game.
On the subject of themes, tone and moral/ethical/existential issues, included in the episode is another segment with Ray, who does work with emotional intelligence and personal growth and development, where we open up Red Dead to the wider topic of catharsis and implication in the interactive medium, centrered around the game's shared DNA with the popular HBO series and fellow prominent-western-in-the-public-consciousness, Westworld. Citing Forbes and IGN articles that reference the series having been inspired by Red Dead, we explore how Arthur (possibly, though I believe likely) regaining his moral centre to be a parallel to a Westworld host going against his programming, and becoming a more complete and true version of himself. The mysterious 'Red Dead Online' that will be featured in the game gives rise to a question Ray and I both have an attempt at answering:
Could RDO be considered a proto-proto Westworld?
A roundtable on the representation of Native Americans and other ethnicities in RDRII's time period is also held, and the concept of Gang hideouts scattered throughout the open world as well. The heavily rumored June release can't come soon enough!'
