Bienvenido al Feed de Daway Inglés. My birthday is on 10th December, and yours? Welcome to the basic English course again guys. I hope everything’s cool. Today we have an important class. I want to speak about dates in English. Las fechas en inglés. This class will be short but it is a very fundamental one, because you will use dates every time you speak, especially in daily conversations. Let’s do it! How dates work in English – cómo funcionan las fechas en inglés To speak about dates in English, we use the ordinal numerals (numerales ordinales, es decir, los que expresan orden y no cantidad). So we don’t say one of December, we say First of December (el primero de Diciembre, no el Uno de Diciembre). So you need to learn the ordinals in English. The first three ones are: 1st – the first (el primero, fíjate en la famosa terminación”st”, que no dejan de ser las dos últimas letras de la palabra “first”) 2nd – the second (el segundo, lo mismo con la terminación “nd”, de la palabra “second”) 3rd – the third (el tercero, idéntica la razón para escribir “rd”) So the first, the second and the third. Those are the basic numerals. Now, for the rest…we use the ending “th” (usamos el número junto a la terminación “th”, que se pronuncia /z/, como un sonido zeta): 4th – the fourth /forz/ el cuarto 5th – the fifth /fifz/ el quinto 6th – the sixth (el sexto) 7th – the seventh (el séptimo) The only exception is 5, it is not “fiveth” but “fifth”. To write them, we can say: 20th November / November 20th El mes puede ir tanto detrás de la fecha como delante. The twentieth of November / November the twentieth Careful! Cuidado. In English from the UK (British English), people often write: 1.9.07 (day/month/year): 1st September 2007 (se diría “the first of September of 2007) But in American English, people usually write: 1.4.07 (month/day/year): 4th January 2007 (the fourth of January of 2007) Thanks for listening That’s all guys. Good job, that was a good class. Now you have to listen to the podcast, again and again and again until you remember how to do this.
