Nuevo podcast de 'Aprende inglés con Radio Um.e': The Jaipur knee.
Hello everyone, this is 'Aprende Idiomas con el Servicio de Idiomas de la Universidad de Murcia', and in this podcast we will be talking about ‘The Jaipur knee’. As you listen, I would like you to write down the definition of a ‘prosthetic leg’. There are many people around the world who have serious problems walking and doing regular activities by themselves because they have lost a leg or part of a leg for various reasons such as health problems or an accident. To help people with this problem, prosthetic legs have been developed. A prosthetic leg is an artificial replacement of a leg, and in the United States of America it may cost between $5,000 and $50,000 and may only last 3 to 5 years. However, there are some that last much longer. Because prosthetic legs are generally very expensive, there are a lot of people who are unable to access them. However, I am happy to say that all hope is not lost for these people! While studying at the University of Stanford in the USA, students were challenged to create a knee joint for amputees in developing countries. The students had to create a knee joint that would be relatively cheap but that would also work very well in order to help the people that needed it the most. Joel Sadler, who was born and raised in the Caribbean island of Jamaica, was one of the students given that task by his lecturer, and he led a team of students to develop what is now called The Jaipur Knee. They worked along with the Jaipur Foot charity and were able to design a knee joint that, if used normally, could be used for at least 3 years and would cost about $25. During a Ted Talk in Jamaica, Joel spoke about his inspiration for the Jaipur Knee and how he and his team worked to build it. To begin, the team used cardboard to produce a model for their design. Later, they managed to create a prototype of a knee joint, and a prototype is basically a model of something. This prototype would have cost less than $100. However, the students did not stop there, they continued to try to come up with better models and continually tested their knee joints. They also listened to the users and took their comments about the product into consideration as they designed new prototypes until they were able create a prosthetic knee joint that was user-friendly and affordable. Their work on this project did not go unnoticed. In 2009, Time magazine named the Jaipur knee ‘one of the 50 Best Inventions of the World’ in that year. Joel said that one idea that can help when faced with what seems to be an impossible task is to look at the big problem and break it up into smaller pieces that can be solved. In so doing, you can come up with small solutions that can then solve a big problem. He also said that ‘big ideas start small’, so if you have an idea, start to work on it and you may be surprised at the amazing things you can achieve. At the beginning of the podcast you were asked to find the definition of a ‘prosthetic leg’ which is simply an artificial replacement of a leg.
