Guest: Desta Dawn
Hi my name is Desta Dawn and I'm an R&B singer born and raised in Oakland, CA. I've been singing my entire life, I mean I even taught myself how to read through song when I was four years old, so I would pretty much say it's in my blood. Throughout the years growing up I would sing at weddings, funerals, party events, and many MANY talent competitions. Everyone in my community knew me as the singer, and I absolutely loved it. When I turned 18 I made the decision to move out to Los Angeles to pursue my acting and singing career while attending a performing arts university, AMDA. It was there that I really began to dig deeper into my craft.
February of 2016 I began working on my very first project "602", named after my birthday. My EP included 5 songs, including my single "Doin Betta". While working on this EP I listened to a lot of artists that I would say inspire me and really influenced my sound. I would say my sound has more of a 90s-early 2000s R&B feel to it, which would make sense since all I really listened to growing up were artists like India Arie, Musiq Soulchild, Erykah Badu, Eric Bennet, Jill Scott, Floetry I mean the lists goes on and on.
I released the project on, you guessed it, June 02 aka my 21st birthday. It was a present to myself, to finally for the first time be able to release my own material, to have people receive and feel my music, to receive me.
Since then I have been performing all over and I just released my brand new single "Set Me Free" that you can find on Soundcloud. "Set Me Free" has such a different vibe to it then "Doin Betta" did, because I'm much more vulnerable in this song and I'm actually expressing how I really need someone in my life rather than just saying I don't need anyone. I'm currently working on my new EP "My Black Love" that will be released later this year! But until then, I'll be dropping another single or two to get people warmed up.
