In our society & culture today – the idea of instant success is HUGE! In fact, it’s a sickeningly booming online business right now isn’t it? From over-reported but under-explained success stories of athletes who rose from nothing to music sensations that make their rise to the top look easy.
I wanna share a quote with you. “If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.” There’s another saying, “what got you here, won’t get you there.” – unknown.
Recently, I had the privilege to sit down with my new friend, Greg Gatsby.
Hailing from Boston, MA, Greg is a DJ, producer, and artist. He started his career as a DJ and music producer while cleaning carpets at college campuses to pay for studio time.
Take it from me, Kaizenites – Greg is the REAL DEAL and he definitely didn’t start with a silver spoon in his mouth – he’s had to hustle, and hustle consistently, to get where he is today.
Leveraging an opportunity to drive for Uber – just being himself – Greg talked his way into a gig playing at Harvard. The hustle didn’t stop there – Greg was determined to claw his way to the top so he followed up on that Harvard opportunity and secured a gig playing for Google!
As you can tell, Greg earned every bit of respect and renown that he has in the music industry today – but his success didn’t come easy, nor did it stay easy!

From Greg’s perspective and mine – success comes to those who put in the time and effort to master their craft and avoid shortcuts. Mastering your craft is like developing a slow-cooked meal that takes hours – sure, you could pop something in the microwave, but if you want those deep and rich flavors, it’s gonna take some time.
You can’t microwave something that will knock people out of the park; the key ingredient is love & time!
What are you gonna do with the time you have on this planet? Are you gonna waste it wishing that someone swoops in and hands you a pile of loot to make your dreams come true OR are you gonna go out there and take ownership of your success as well your failures?
Greg and I have both found that embracing your primary role in your success is liberating! Don’t tie your self-worth and value to the opinions and actions of others – you can’t control that. Get your head on straight, put in the time, and master your craft. It might sound like a simple formula, but it works!
Kaizenites, I’m inviting you on a journey that isn’t easy. I’m encouraging you to swear-off shortcuts and microwave meals for something that can stand the test of time. Trust me; you don’t want to get exposed as an imposter – I’ve seen it happen way too many times. Earn your fame, earn your success, and embrace your ability to write your own story!
