Throughout this episode, I’m going to need you to think of me as your mentor, but also a bit like a mom. I need you to know that I’m going to be dropping some bits of truth that might be hard to hear, but I’m going to be doing it all with the love and support of a mother. I know that this is hard. I know that things are going to be hard to hear. But I know that you are capable. Just as I would want to be honest with my kids, I want and need to be honest and real with you.
1. Breaking into photography is hard, and you’re going to need to step it upWhen I started out 8 years ago….instagram wasn’t a thing; but regardless, I was determined to make things happen
Tune into the episode to hear why I know that you’re probably not going to blow up like a huge photographer, but THAT’S OKAY. You don’t need to serve everyone; you don’t need to travel all around the world.
You can do you, be you, share you, and serve those who are here and ready for you.
2. You’re going to make mistakes, and continue making them; it’s how we learnI’ve made a lot of mistakes; I’ve spent lots of time crying after hanging up the phone with a client
I’ve cried while second shooting a wedding
I’ve cried countless times over not having enough booked
You’re human
But you learn, you handle it, you make changes, you TRY
3. You need to put in the legwork - you can’t just throw up a website and raise your prices and think “here we go! Watch the inquiries roll in”
If people have no idea who you are, they have no reason to trust you or pay your premium prices
It’s the same with anything in life, there is work that needs to be done. You have to build trust.
I know that you have the knowledge, and knowledge is worth $$$, but there’s also another “business” line of things that you need to walk, or the business side of things that you need to weave into your intuition
I’m really big on working my business intuitively, but I know that that still means that I need to also integrate actual tangible business practices. Once I build my brand, I can be as quirky and intuitive that I want because people have a HISTORY that they can trust. They know who I am, they know what I stand for.
4. It’s ongoing - you’re not going to reach a place where you can just sit back and coast.
You’re your own boss - that means you are responsible for it all, it’s all up to you, all of the things. This is wonderful, but it’s also hard, and you’re going to get tired of it sometimes. You’re going to wish that someone else would just take care of this for you, but you have to know that these peaks and valleys are going to show up all of the time; they are going to come and go
I could actually probably draw you a template of the entire year and highlight probable areas of panic, crying, negative self talk, talk, and then celebration hahaha
This is all up to you.
There’s only so much that I can tell you, there’s only so much that you can absorb through a podcast or a book or someone else’s story.
If you’re not making this work, it will not work.
I can set you up with all of the information, I can build you a website, I can give you content, but if YOU’RE not showing up for yourself consistently. If you’re not waking up and grinding this out. If you’re not hustling your butt off not because you have to, but also because you WANT TO. Then this simply will not work.
You are the key. You are the reason. So I need you to start showing up for yourself. Show up anyway. Do the work. I read on Emily’s (@emilyoud) instagram post the other day that “time is going to pass anyway”; whether you’re lazing around and putting this off, or hustling hard to try, the time is passing and it will continue to do so. So make the choice to show up; sure maybe it won’t pay off….but what about when it does?
