I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how frequently we hold ourselves back. I know that you’re probably nodding along like “yup, all the time”. Same.
We always do. It’s not necessarily that intentionally holding ourselves back, but more so that we are being held back by our own fear. Which actually has always been used as a safety response in historical times, which now that we live in a more civilized and modern world, it ends up getting in our way more than it can end up heeding us away from safety.
We hold ourselves back because we are afraid.
It always comes down to fear. There are two types of people in the world; there are the unsuccessful people who look at fear and think “nope, can’t do it, I might as well just quit, or turn around now, or ask for help, or not even try”, then there are the successful people, and they are the ones who feel the fear, the ones that come face-to-face with a road block, and they stop and think “okay, what does this mean? How can i face this fear? How can i pass through it? How can i learn whatever i need to learn in order to grow and expand?”
That’s the very fundamental difference between two widely different groups of people.
You are unsuccessful because you are afraid, but not simply because you’re afraid; we all become afraid. But your unsuccessful because you face the fear and you turn around rather than forging ahead.
You are unsuccessful because you are okay with quitting if it means that instead you would have to learn to go further.
Maybe this was how you’ve felt in the past, but it doesn't mean that this is how you have to always feel moving forward. Which is why I wanted to use todays’ episode to propel you through that fear; to champion you through and out to the other side of that fear. To share my own struggles and fear encounters so that you too can feel inspired to move through whatever is holding you back: tune into the episode to hear more about my own huge moments of fear and struggle.
So in learning all of that, I wanted to share with you a few ways that you can step it up at your next shoot or wedding, as well as few truths that might help you break down some barriers as well.
Nobody is paying attention to you. Before you were a photographer, did you ever notice a photographer at a wedding? I know it may feel like all eyes are on you, but trust me they aren’t…get out there, move around, get close, nobody even notices you despite feeling like all eyes are on you.
You are going to be asked questions that don’t pertain to photography - know this, embrace this, and psych yourself up to be the confident, calm and collected guide for the day
Capturing more is better than capturing less
Move, try, say what you need to say, step in if you need to step in
